Course Application
HANDGUN |
Tactical Defensive Pistol
1 |
Level one of a
three tier progressive program. We hesitate to use the word basic to
describe this introduction to defensive handgun use. However we also
understand that a foundation must be established for the proper and
effective use of firearms in a defensive role. This course covers the
fundamentals of proper use of the handgun as it pertains to home,
business or the public environment. Topics covered are: Safety,
Marksmanship, Loading Manipulations, Malfunction Manipulations,
Presentation, Movement and Moving Targets. The course is designed to
establish a strong foundation for applying the defensive handgun skills
under physical and mental stress, that is prevalent in potentially
dangerous encounters. Basic stealth tactics and search techniques are
discussed as well as proper mindset. Equipment needed for the class:
2-day - 600 rounds, pistol, proper leather gear, eye and ear protection,
hat or cap preferred, proper clothing for time of year. 3-day format -
1000 rounds, same support equipment |
Tactical Defensive Pistol
2 |
In this class
the fundamentals are recovered to ensure a proper start to progressive
learning. We do not, however, expect to start over. The student should
be prepared to advance from the introductory skills and progress to more
advanced techniques. Mindset is discussed and is paramount in training
and application, should these skills be called upon in a dangerous
defensive encounter. Topics covered in this course include: Shooting and
Moving, Retention Shooting, Ground Fighting, Use of Cover/Concealment,
Search Tactics, and Low Light Skills. Equipment needed for this class: 2
- day - 750 rounds, pistol, proper leather gear, eye and ear protection,
hat or cap preferred, proper clothing for time of year, flashlight
(spare). 3 - Day - 1200 rounds. |
Tactical Defensive
Pistol
3 |
As always the
topics of the previous classes will be re-covered to ensure that the
class as a whole is up to speed and ready to progress. The class will,
however, progress rapidly and the need to step-up and adjust the
internal clock will be required. Moving at we call the "Speed of Life",
the students will be taught advanced pistol tactics that include but are
not limited to the following topics: Shooting and Movement to Cover,
Strong and Opposite Hand Shooting, Injury Drills, Advanced Ground
Fighting Techniques, Search Tactics in Low Light, Moving Targets,
Multiple Target Issues, and Tactical Search Techniques. Equipment needed
for this class: 3- day only - 1500 rounds, same support equipment as
TDP-2. |
Tactical Defensive
Pistol Low
Light |
Level 1 or 2
required for this course. Although, statistically, most gunfights take
place in low light, we do not spend enough of our training time
preparing for this. This class starts in the afternoon and ends in dark,
starting with day number one. During the daylight hours, we will cover
techniques to be used at night such as: flashlight techniques, use of
cover, loading, malfunctions, presentations, movement and search
techniques. The night portion will be a practical application of the
skills taught during the daylights hours. Equipment needed for class:
2-day format - 600 rounds, pistol, flashlight, spare, batteries and
bulbs, proper leather gear, eye (clear) and ear protection, hat or cap,
proper clothing. 3-day format will require 1000 rounds. |

3 Days |
This course is intended for those that are familiar with the basic
principals of safety and use of the handgun, semi-auto rifle, and
shotgun. Prior training in at least one of the weapon systems is
preferred to take the class. This course is fast paced with little
classroom instruction and lots of range time. In this three-day class,
we will cover proper safety, marksmanship, manipulation and practical
application of each weapon system. Some of the topics covered in each
segment will be, use of cover and concealment, shooting and moving,
shooting at moving targets, continuity of fire as well as other enhanced
training skills. Equipment required for the course: Handgun, rifle
(semi), shotgun, appropriate leather gear for each system, eye, ear,
knee and elbow protection, spare magazines, 500 rounds pistol, 400
hundred rounds rifle, 200 birdshot, 30 rounds buckshot, 20 rounds slug.

SHOTGUN |
Tactical
Defensive Shotgun |
The fighting
shotgun can be a very effective defensive tool. Shotguns are very
versatile with a wide range of ammunition available. They are, however,
highly misunderstood, underrated and overrated, and the most consistent
thing about them in regards to ammunition selection and patterning is
their inconsistency. This course covers the aspects of manipulation of
the weapon, patterning, carry, safe and proper deployment, use of cover,
and a practical application of the shotgun. Equipment for the class:
Shotgun, sling, eye and ear protection, suitable clothing, knee and
elbow protection, 250 bird shot, 100 buck shot, 25 slug. |
RIFLE |
Tactical Urban Rifle
1 |
This course is
designed to establish the foundation for the safe and proper use of the
semi-automatic rifle. The course will provide the student with a
thorough working knowledge of the mechanics of use, operation and
application of the rifle. Topics to be covered in this course are:
Practical marksmanship (zero), Loading manipulations, Malfunction
manipulations, Primary shooting positions, Secondary shooting positions,
Sling use, Cover/Barricade use, Movement, and Moving targets. Equipment
Requirements: Rifle, spare magazines, sling, eye and ear protection,
knee and elbow pads, hat or cap and bandanna for neck highly
recommended. 2-Day format - 400 rounds, 3-Day format - 650 rounds. |
Tactical Urban Rifle
2 |
Building on TUR
1 or the students' prior professional training, this course will
progress to more advanced techniques and level of difficulty. As with
all SHD courses we review and refine basic fundamentals to ensure that
the students are prepared. New topics to be covered in this course are:
Alternate shooting positions, advanced movement drills, ground fighting,
introduction to flashlight use, addressing moving targets, and stealth
search tactics as well as other tactical applications of the rifle.
Equipment requirements for this class are as follows: Same as TUR 1 with
the addition of a flashlight (weapon mounted allowed but handheld
required). 3 - Day format - 850 rounds. |
Tactical Urban Rifle
3 |
This is an
advanced class for those wanting to truly enhance their gun handling
skills. The student must have a prior SHD class training or acceptable
professional training from a recognized facility. This class will cover
many advanced principles of using the rifle in a lethal force encounter.
Topics to be covered will include: Review of all principles covered in
TUR 1&2, advanced movement drills, injury drills, transition drills,
weapon retention, low light techniques, advanced search techniques/low
light, unknown distance shooting as well as other practical
applications. Equipment requirements for this class: Same as TUR - 2
with the addition of handgun and proper leather gear, clear eye
protection and extra flashlight. 3-day format, 1000 rounds. |
Tactical Urban Rifle
Low
Light |
Level 1 or 2 TUR
required for this course. Based on statistics, most gunfights take place
in low, altered or failing light. To that end, this course is designed
to provide the student with three days of opportunity to apply tactical
rifle skills in that environment. The class begins in the afternoon and
ends after dark. The afternoon portions will cover techniques to be used
in low light environment. After the sun goes down, the skills performed
during the daylight will be applied at night. Topics for the class will
include: Loading, malfunctions, flashlight techniques (weapon mounted
and handheld), cover and concealment, search techniques, movement, and
addressing moving targets. Equipment needed for this class: 3 day format
- Same as TUR 2 with addition of extra batteries and bulbs. |
